When you're developing your personal lifestyle you may want to always say yes to each new opportunity. Saying "No" has just as much power as saying yes, and sometimes saying yes can become a problem.
When making your own lifestyle you want to use your time as efficiently as possible. Basically, you need to be spending your time doing what you're best at.
Other people will constantly be offering advice, and while some of it is great and helpful, sometimes it can be misleading or even affect your ability to do great work. It's important to say no to the suggestions that aren't relevant to your goals.
Saying no doesn't just apply to other people however, it applies to yourself as well. Frequently I find myself excited by a new idea or potential project. With this excitement comes a desire to start right away, to put pen to paper and get to work. However, these new ideas or projects may have to wait.
Not being afraid to say no let's you:
Have the final say in YOUR lifestyle.
It's your life, shouldn't you be in control of your own decisions? When someone suggests something new or tells you you should be doing something different, they are speaking from their experiences.
Listening to what people say is never a bad idea. That being said, sometimes it's better to say no, maybe you're too busy, or you have a different vision, or maybe you don't agree.
Prevent spreading yourself too thin.
What you do with your time is up to you. While others may have an idea of what you need to be doing, ultimately you are in control of what you do. If you do everything everyone suggests, instead of what you're best at, the quality of your efforts can drop drastically.
I've talked about keeping your focuses down to three things before, adding more and more is only going to make you less effective when crafting your personal lifestyle.
Do what you're best at.
We all have different strengths and weaknesses, so only you know what you're best at. By only saying yes to the things you know you do well, the quality of your work improves and you can cover your weaknesses.
This isn't to say just don't do the other things, but look into delegating them or making them easier to do so you spend less time on them.
Spend your time effectively and efficiently.
We all know there are those things we should say "No" to. Going out with your friends when you've got work to do for tomorrow, or maybe letting someone steer you in the wrong direction with their suggestions.
If you want to craft a personal lifestyle that fits around your passion, you should be looking to maximize your time. Everyone has 24 hours in a day but it depends on what they do with it that helps achieve success.
Stay on track with goals.
Maybe you read something or hear some advice that you can't wait to try. Even when you've got goals you were set on accomplishing. While something new can be exciting and maybe even effective, it's important to stay on track with goals.
Saying "No" to something temporarily keeps you focused on achieving your goals. Saving it for later might make you more motivated to finish what you're currently working on.
Saying no, and listening to yourself instead of others are both powerful tactics when it comes to crafting your personal lifestyle. It's YOUR personal lifestyle and that means you decide what you do with it.
It's always important to listen, but it's also important to know what will help you achieve your personal goals towards your lifestyle and what won't. Saying no at the right time could be the difference between you feeling overwhelmed or perfectly collected.
